5 August, Delhi: -Aam Aadmi Party led Delhi government suffered a blow on Monday when the Supreme Court upheld the Lieutenant Governor’s authority to appoint ten aldermen to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) unilaterally and without seeking state cabinet approval.

Problem increased for Aam Aadmi Party on Monday when the Supreme Court upheld the Lieutenant Governor’s authority to appoint ten aldermen to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) unilaterally and without seeking state cabinet approval.
Chief Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud led the bench that included Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice PS Narasimha, who delivered the decision.
According to Justice Narasimha, the LG is not obligated to follow the state cabinet’s guidance or assistance in the nomination of alderman, as it is a “statutory duty.”
The Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act, which was revised in 1993, gives the LG the authority to nominate aldermen, as the bench clarified under Section 3(3)(b)(i).
