IGNOU is awakening the spirit of education among the prisoners in Haryana jails

Chandigarh, May 9 – Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is working to awaken the spirit of education among the prisoners lodged in various jails of Haryana by connecting them with higher education. Study centers have been set up by IGNOU in jails for prisoners who have passed 12th class and want to pursue higher education. If a prisoner is pursuing graduation or any other higher course then his studies and examinations are arranged by IGNOU free of cost during his tenure in jail.

Giving information in this regard, the university spokesperson said that the prisoners in jail are trying to remove the darkness of their lives with the light of education. To improve the future of criminals, education program is being run under IGNOU. Its objective is that criminals can make good use of the time spent in jail. In the last three years, a total of 792 prisoners in various jails of Haryana have successfully taken steps towards pursuing higher education.

He said that during this period, hundreds of prisoners have taken admission in various courses, who will now be able to get educated and join the main stream of the society. The prisoners are also inspiring other prisoners to study while in jail. The prisoners are constantly being encouraged to get educated, so that after serving their sentence, they can leave here and improve their future.
